Types of wine glasses
There are three main types: Bordeaux, Burgundy and all-purpose.
The Bordeaux glass is taller and narrower than the Burgundy glass to preserve the aroma of the Bordeaux red wine in the glass. Capacities from 12 to 18 oz.
The two glasses named after the wine region are indeed tailor-made to suit the grape varieties of the different regions – the Bordeaux glass is more suitable for tasting the wines of the Bordeaux region, whether it is a full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon or a Merlot with soft tannins and low acidity can perform well;
The Burgundy Cup, on the other hand, is better when tasting the more acidic Pinot Noir grapes in Burgundy. Because different parts of the tongue have different sensitivity to taste – the tip of the tongue is most sensitive to sweetness, the back of the tongue is most sensitive to bitterness, while the inside and outside of the tongue are sensitive to acid and salty respectively. The design of the wine glass is based on such a human body. Structure, the difference in the order in which the liquor wraps the tongue balances the sweetness of the fruit and the acidity of the tannins for a smoother mouthfeel. Regardless of whether the Bordeaux Cup or the Burgundy Cup, there are several detailed classifications.
